What You Wanted To Know About Guitar Accessories List

Sandy asks…

What Should I get for my B-day?

I am truing 14, I am tech savvy, I love school (i can already see the reactions), i am complex in my ways of thinking and socializing, I am a boy, I don’t play video games, and the list goes on. So plz give me like 10 things I should get thanks in advance. LOL this looks like I am trying to hook up ;)

guitarlessons answers:

Cool,
The reality is – there is nothing that you “should” get. Reason being – it’s all gifts.

Secondly – because the items are gifts, it totally depends on how much money people have to spend. Maybe you should get a nice computer, or – maybe you should get a used bike to deliver papers to help the family budget.

Third – defining yourself as complex is slightly offputting when other people hear it. It’s like saying “I’m smart. Behold the complex boy”.

I’m only telling you this to help you out. Modesty is a virtue. Confidence is a strong positive and attracts women, if it’s a quiet confidence and if it’s based on reality. It generally needs to be something other people figure out though. It’s ok to believe in yourself deep down, but rarely is it ok to share just how strongly you feel. The reason being, it’s hard to do without lowering the person listening.

So – lecture aside, here are some suggestions:

1. If you aren’t physically active, you need to be. It’s good for you. Cycling is an excellent sport for a 14 year old. If you already have a bike (not the weird ones with pegs that kids diddle around with in grocery store lots), maybe you could get accessories – a mileage computer, gloves, etc. If you don’t have one, money towards it is nice.

2. Sounds like you are thinking of girls now. A decent cologne that’s somewhat age appropriate would be good. Chrome is good. Alot of the younger dudes are wearing Axe and Tag. Cheap colognes smell like cheap colognes. It’s better to get half as much of something good. When you wear it, no more than someone can smell if they lean in towards you is the right amount.

3. Do you play an instrument? Music is good, as are accessories. If you don’t, maybe it’s time to start. You can get decent quality guitars on overstock.com for 1/3 of the retail price on name brands. Ditto w/ a harmonica.

4. You need to start learning about money. You need to read “The Millionaire Next Door” and “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”. These books are so good, and you need them early for so many reasons that this one tidbit of advice may be worth millions of dollars to you. It’s definitely worth hundreds of thousands.

5. Karate lessons. You need to be able to defend yourself and any woman you are with.

6. A good light action fishing rod and reel and a half a dozen decent lures. Rebel crawdads, rattletraps, and rapala minnows are good options.

7. Smoke and Spice. It’s a cookbook that will teach you to grill and smoke meats like a pro. Few things turn on a woman like having a guy cook for her. You’ll save alot of money doing it for yourself later. This isn’t something you need to do alot of immediately, as your parents probably cook most of the time. It doesn’t mean you can’t start learning early.

8. A good durable chess set. Practice playing with software, online computers, or people online, then move on to your friends or family.

9. A nice high end white button down shirt and some good slacks. You are old enough to look grown up sometimes. You can’t do that with what most teenagers wear now.

10. A job. ;)

Happy Birthday dude.

-Kevin

Charles asks…

I need to sell my guitar!?

I need to sell my squire “strat” guitar with accessories what’s the best website I could do this on? I already tried eBay but it didn’t work out so well and I’ve tried craigslist

guitarlessons answers:

You need to face the fact that a Squier Strat is a bottom of the line crappy guitar. Most people who are new at selling stuff expect far too much for their used gear. The rule of thumb is that used gear sells for around half of its original or current selling price, whichever is lower – a little more if it’s really good gear and a little less if it’s low end gear. Find out what they sell for new and list it on craigslist for a little more than half and expect to settle for half.

What You Wanted To Know About Jazz Guitarists

Why is it so hard for even a heavy metal virtuoso guitarist to outplay a good swing jazz guitarist?

Why is it so hard for even a heavy metal virtuoso guitarist to outplay a good swing jazz guitarist?

?are jazzers really THAT good?i know guys who can play both, but i notice if he knows jazz as well he’s almost untouchable

guitarlessons answers:

Well really it goes back to the quote “Blues are the roots and everything else is the fruits”. I’m not sure who said that but i don’t take take credit for it, just wanna make that clear. But what I’m trying to say is even though Heavy Metal is a very complex style of music its only based off all the other music that came before it. So knowing how to play the blues or jazz really well can help you in a different newer style of music because those two styles are the base and “roots” if u will of, yes, Heavy Metal. My suggestion is learn all older styles of music like jazz and blues first, before u learn a newer style of music like Heavy Metal especially if your a guitarist.

What You Wanted To Know About Drum Set

Laura asks…

if i bought the guitar hero legends of rock package and bought a seperate drum set, can i use the drums on it?

so i bought guitar hero: legends of rock and i also have the drum set from guitar hero: world tour, well im going to get it. so my question is will i be able to use the drums to play legends of rock?

guitarlessons answers:

No sorry the drum set only works for World Tour, you can’t use it on Legends of Rock.

Donna asks…

How bad is it to leave your Drum set outside?

I am buying a new drum set and i was thinking about leaving it outside, but under a tarp roof and the weather is great cause i live in southern California can you tell me how bad it would be?

guitarlessons answers:

I wouldn’t recommend it, but that depends on where the drum set is. The tarp roof is a good idea, as long as the drums aren’t left where some stranger could steal/mess around with them. If you’re gonna leave them outside, I’d definitely clean them once in a while. I live in Massachusetts, where the weather varies, so my drums are left in my basement. But for you, it should be fine, just keep an eye on your kit.

James asks…

How do I play my drum set in my igloo on club penguin?

is it possible or is the drum set for decoration?

guitarlessons answers:

Sorry, but the drum set is only for decoration..

Have fun though anyways! :D

What You Wanted To Know About Bass Guitars

Charles asks…

whats the metal strip above the pick ups on some bass guitars?

i have seen a metal strip above the strings and pickup on a few bass guitars. whats it for?

guitarlessons answers:

The Glaxotryda.

Robert asks…

What types of bass guitars have shorter necks?

I’ve been looking for a new bass at a decent price, but I really want one with a bit shorter neck.

guitarlessons answers:

Look for a bass advertised as a “short scale” bass.

The scale is the distance from the nut to the bridge, or the total vibration length of the strings. A standard long scale bass has a 34 in. Scale, and a short scale has a 30 in scale, making the neck about 3 in. Shorter.

The Ibanez Mikro series is a decent short scale bass for a really good price.

Mandy asks…

what are some good slap bass bass guitars?

Currently i have a shitty squier p-bass and i’m looking to upgrade. I play alot of slap bass and i’m wondering if there is anything other than Ernie Ball Music Man basses that sound good for slap bass. Thanks!

guitarlessons answers:

Have you tried the Sterling? The neck is a lot thinner. I’m not exactly sure what the pickup selector does and how it affects sound, but that has been discussed a few times and can be answered with a search.

The Stingray was noted to me alright for slap too. However the Stingray had good sound but getting around the fretboard takes a bit of effort and to set the sound up from slappy to low and punchy takes a bit of time.

guitarlessons answers:

Joseph asks…

Could I tune my guitar strings up to Capo?

I like to go on Guitar Tabbing sites like Ultimate Guitar and some of the songs have Capos and I don’t have the bar thing that you put on your guitar. So for an alternative, can I tune my strings up to Capo?

guitarlessons answers:

Sorry, but Tommy is incorrect here.

Music usually says to use a capo because that’s the way the song was originally recorded. For example. You could play “Early Morning Rain” by Gordon Lightfoot with a capo on the second fret, as the music is written. The reason for this is even though the song is actually in the key of E, Gordon chooses to play the song with a capo so the he can play in E while using the voicing of an open D, G and A chord, which the tone of sounds quite different than if you did not use a capo and played E, A and B chords, which are the chord of the song, but the tone sounds completely different.

This is the actual use for a capo, and not just to change the key, as the only people that use capos for that are country singers that only know three or four chords and use a guitar as a stage prop.

Otherwise, using a capo is by no means cheating. It is a tool to used certain voicing in a diffent key.

Since you don’t have one, just go to your local music store. They can sell you a Kyser Capo, which is the best, for under 20 dollars and unless you loose it, it will last you a lifetime.

Joseph asks…

If i take acoustic guitar lessons should i take ukulele or electric guitar lessons?

I want to learn how to learn how to play some instruments so i figured if i take acoustic guitar lessons do i still need to take ukulele or electric guitar lessons? i dont want to spend money if i dont have to so if you have any answers please tell me! soon!

guitarlessons answers:

Quick Answer – No. The basics are exactly the same. And a Uke is just the top 4 strings of the guitar basically (tuned up a fifth, but the chord shapes are the same). Now that said – after you get a little more advanced, working with a good player from those other instruments is a good idea..

Robert asks…

How can I find local guitar lessons?

Well I don’t wanna give out my precise location but I live in New Jersey. And I’d like to take up the acoustic guitar. Lessons without other people would be best. I truly just don’t know how to go about this. I really would like to understand how to play music and write it and all. Any help please? Oh and plus, I’m not sure what guitar I should get for my size and what kind? Do teachers assist with that as well? Help please!

What You Wanted To Know About Blues Guitar

Thomas asks…

What is a great guitar for blues/classic rock?

I am an intermediate guitarist starting learn how to play blues style music. My current guitar is basically a hard rock/metal guitar and although blues does sound ok on it i would prefer a guitar that really stands out when blues is played. I have been looking at Epiphone SG’s and Fender Strats and Teles but I don’t know whats best. However any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks

guitarlessons answers:

Fender Strats and Les Pauls are both great for rock and blues. SG’s are also a good choice. It’s about what feels good in your hands. That’s a personal preference. Playing the blues isn’t about what instrument you play. When you get into it more you’ll see it’s about the feeling you convey with your music. If you’ve got the heart and the right chops, it wouldn’t matter if you played a ukelele. People will still be moved by it. Play from the heart, practice hard and the rest will come.

I cant decide on a tutorial or anything to help me begin. Whats the best place to start learning?

guitarlessons answers:

Hello there,

You can get a teacher that will teach you on how to play guitar, but if you do not want to get a teacher you can go to youtube and type guitar lesson. This can help you a lot in learning guitar. And also always practice your finger in hitting the notes of your guitar and cut your fingernails. And also if you have friend who knows how to play guitar you can ask them to help you, ot if you don’t want just do self practice, by reading, watching videos, and application.

Hope this will gonna help you, do your best…… If you have some questions to ask just drop me a line..

Maria asks…

going on tour with my band what should i take with me ?

clothing/productivity/how many bass guitars….etc… or what do you take when your on tour thats most important? ear plugs? Touring most of europe… underground scene.

guitarlessons answers:

Depends on the tour budget and space available, but as you say “underground scene,” I’d bet both are at something of a premium. Here are my suggestions- adjust for tour length:

1 week’s worth of clothes, for traveling, relaxing and sight-seeing.
3 sets of “stage clothes” or costume- 3 shirts, 3 pants, 3 etc. You can get by with 1 pair of shoes and 1 each of accessories that don’t require laundering, here.
1 foot-locker type trunk, so you don’t have to rummage around for clothing so much.
1 bass and 1 backup.
1 set of strings.
1 amp.
1 “Pod” or Sans-amp kind of thing- small, compact, will work if amp fails, just run through house system.
3 or 4 instrument cables.
Copies of set lists, charts, etc- you don’t want to be without if originals get lost, you are hungover, etc.
Copy of passport, in your luggage.
Songwriter’s notebook, if you write music.
Journal.
1 brief-case or laptop bag, for non-clothing items.
Brain-healthy things to do to relieve the tedium- Sudoku, travel games, good books.
A sense of wonder- you can have the time of your life, if you keep your attitude right.

Lisa asks…

What do I get a 30 year old man for his birthday?

Here’s a list of what he likes:
Kansas City Chiefs
Guitars
Cars
Hats
He has a child
PS3 games
He’s Asian
Cooking
Chewing Tobacco

guitarlessons answers:

A beautiful 20 yr. Old woman??? Just kidding. If you buy a game for the PS# would it be more for him or his child? One of the better choices would be a hat. Since the price would not break your credit card. Depends on how picky he is about his appearance. If he likes cars you could get him an accessory for his car. How about an oil change? If you want something more romantic (if you are his significant other) then go for a hat you know he will like.

How or What can I use to Improve my Bass Guitar Technique?

I’ve been playing bass guitar for probably 5 – 6 years. Most of my style has been pop, rock, metal. I would like to improve my playing techniques and get into a more jazz, walking bass line style. Does anyone know some good practice tabs, or songs that I can use to practice and improve in that area.

I have Guitar Pro 5.2 if anyone wants to inform me of guitar pro tabs. I also can read sheet music if that’s all you have.

Thanks for your help, I’m also open to any styles that will improve my playing.

If interested in how I currently play you can hear my recorded CD with Currentleo at, http://www.myspace.com/currentleo

How do people learn solos on guitar?

Like jazz/blues solos. I’ve been researching on what kind of electric guitar I want, and I searched up the Epiphone Dot on Youtube for a demo and they play really nice solos. I can read tabs. For notes, I can only read treble clef on the violin. I think I’m an intermediate. I’ve learned a lot of power chord. The only fingerstyle song I can play is Blackbird by The Beatles. I think I have to learn some scales, am I right? What kind of scale?

I play the piano, violin (both on notes), and the acoustic guitar (on tabs &chords; looking for an electric).

guitarlessons answers:

First of all, learn the pentatonic scale on the 5th position (key of A minor). Learn the blues scale, which is similar to the pentatonic scale, but with some added “blue” notes. That way, you understand the basic shape of the pentatonic scale.

Then learn it in a few different keys, notably A, E, G, and D. Learn the major pentatonic scales. Learn the scales all around the neck. Then learn how the scales are related.

That should give you a basis for soloing. Of course, you can still learn solos as you’re learning the scales.

The Epiphone Dot is a pretty good guitar, but check out the Ibanez Artcores. I personally prefer the Fender Telecaster for every style of music that I play. Of course, go to the store, buy whatever is in your price range, and that you can connect to.

Where can i get a cheap used country guitar?

Im looking for a cheap country guitar and the cheapest one i can find is 300$. I live in Mcleansboro Illinois.. Im looking for one 100$ or less.
….ok……

guitarlessons answers:

There’s no such thing as a “country guitar.” A guitar is a guitar (with the exception of the “classical guitar,” but I’ve heard Chet Atkins play great country music on a classical guitar) — it’s the person playing it that determines what music is coming out of it.

Wal-Mart sells acoustic guitars for a low price, but I don’t know the quality of them.
